BUG (2006) Film Review

Posted on 9:19 AM by Unknown

Bug (2006)

Plot:   Agnes (Ashley Judd) is a mess, living in a scruffy motel, indulging in drink and drugs worried about her abusive ex Jerry (Harry Connick Jr) who has just been released from prison.

Things aren’t exactly going well but they get a fuck load worse when she's introduced to Peter (Michael Shannon) a seemingly nice timid guy who makes her feel wanted again.  Giving all her trust to him until he draws her into a Bug infested world of madness.

I found a fucking pube

Is it good:  Yes, William Friedkin the legend behind the Exorcist (1973) hasn’t had a mention in a while but he proves with Bug that he can still get in your head.  Not a conventional horror more a drug induced sub Cronenberg flick.

Ashley Judd shows has always been damn good, criminally underrated actress with nipples that could cut glass & they make a much appreciated appearance.
She is damaged and susceptible to abuse, agreeing it’s her fault when her ex returns and beats her.  Which could be a contributing factor to being overcome by the errr bugginess of life.

That escalated quickly
It’s open to interpretation, what it’s all about, whether he is a veteran that has been experimented on, or just a schizophrenic with an infections personality, or as I think bug is just a metaphor for & effect of the crack or meth they seem to be on.  It would explain there deterioration, paranoia and alienation from others while relying just on each other drawn into their own world.  I am probably completely wrong but I’m happy not to know just like I never knew what the fuck Cronenberg or Lynch were doing.

As with the Exorcist the claustrophobic intensity a single room film gives is what Friedkin does best.

Also there is a nice touch of gore mostly self inflicted.

De-bugged
Turdige:  The doctor/whatever?? was bit of a weak link not convincing as, well, anything.  Not much else maybe could have done with a bit more blood & nipples but that’s what rewind & freeze-frame were invented for.

Overall:   Great acting and atmosphere for a limited location film. Hot sweaty claustrophobic felt difficult to breathe just watching it.   An excellent descent into madness film that really draws you in to the world of the mind fucked.

THE DAY (2011) Movie Review

Posted on 4:14 PM by Unknown

The Day (2011)

Plot:   Iceman teams up with a hobbit and a demon possessed girl to defeat some post apocalypse cannibal psychopaths.  It took a while to get that out of my head before taking in this gloomy violent thriller.

The plot focuses on five survivors of some unexplained end of civilisation event; struggling they find shelter in a deserted farm house and attempt to get some rest & recuperation.

Unfortunately for them some human flesh hungry fuckers have already claimed the house, rigged some traps and won’t give up their rights to the ramshackled shit hole so easily especially not with the potential buffet inside.

You look a little swollen I'd get it seen to

Luckily the group have a tough as shit ginger ninja on their team but with dwindling ammo will the group survive till the day?

Is it good:  Yes, in the end I was won over by this violent, still a hit & miss, low budget effort.  The acting talent was high for the budget involved Adam (Shawn Ashmore) – X man trilogy, The Ruins.  Rick (Dominic Monaghan) - Lord of the rings trilogy, X-Men Origins: Wolverine.  Mary (Ashley Bell) - The Last Exorcism.  Henson (Cory Hardrict) Battle: Los Angeles & Nikki (Brianna Barnes) - One Missed Call.

The gore level is quite high, mostly CGI blood but some pretty extreme face smashing & at least one nasty torture scene.  Not that I’m a sicko but it spiced the film up nicely.  The action too is pretty good, Ashley Bell being the star of the show, for a skinny lass she surely does kick some and look convincing with it.  Intense and brutal taking no prisoners.

Thor III the anorexia years
The look of the post apocalypse world has a convicting The Book Of Eli (2010) feel, gloomy, low contrast blue & gray colouring but obviously without its high budget battered landscapes (not even an overturned Nissan Micra).
Very serious movie but a couple of funny moments like the inspiring loser’s speech.

Turdige:  The early part of the film was kind of dull a couple of crappy (nothing happening) flash backs and some mumbling.  Even a bit of Brianna Barnes nakedness couldn’t pick it up.

Also I swear like a fucker but strangely the way they used fuck as pretty much every word in a sentence (mostly Cory Hardrict) it lost its value and seemed unconvincing dialog.  It made me wanted to side with the cannibals, they seemed more civilised (If you overlooked the flesh chomping).

On that note the bad guys were a bit overlooked.  The leader, Father (Michael Eklund) turned out a default post apocalypse bad dude, a cannibal (understandable a guys gotta eat) & sporting a Mohican (not sure why when society breaks down people turn punk).

Shit I forgot the milk
Granted he looked mean but the character was underused and the others were pretty faceless, may as well have been zombies.
The guy I first assumed was the leader with his end of the world preacher psycho kind of look may have been a better choice.

Overall:   Not Brilliant but Ashley Bell makes this post apocalypse gloomy cabin in the wood
cannibal standoff movie, worth 1.5 hours of anyone’s time.

Director: Douglas Aarniokoski Cast: Ashley Bell, Shannyn Sossamon, Dominic Monaghan, Shawn Ashmore , Cory Hardrict, Michael Eklund

CLASSIC SLASHERING

Posted on 8:00 AM by Unknown

Alice, Sweet Alice (Communion) (1976)

Plot: In a rundown neighbourhood, New Jersey, Karen (A very young Brooke Shields) is preparing for her first holy communion.  Older sister Alice (Paula Sheppard) is jealous of the attention Karen tries to spoil things for her, threatening her and locking her in a room of an abandoned warehouse while wearing a raincoat and fucking creepy plastic mask.

Err Guilty
The day of the communion Karen is brutally killed in the church during the ceremony and because Alice takes her place wearing her veil, the suspicions falls on the deeply troubled child, especially from her aunt Annie (Jane Lowry) who really fucking hates her niece.  After she is attached by the masked psycho this escalates.

Their mother Catherine (Linda Miller) is traumatised by the death of her youngest but she and her husband Dom (Niles McMaster) refuse to believe Karen is responsible and Dom investigates the murder.

It doesn't help that Alice is a mental bitch spends her days killing little animals and putting curses on people, throw in a obese potential peado landlord and we have a messed up situation going on.

I'm looking for Donald Sutherland
Is it good:  Yes, A low budget but high value thriller/horror/slasher.  It isn’t a true slasher film in the sense of say Black Christmas but you can see how the cold silent knife wielding, mask wearing, killer would have an influence on the genre.  Paula Sheppard (Although strangely 19 at the time playing a 12 year old) is brilliant as the disturbed Alice, giving a believable performance.

All of the actors put up good performance especially Alphonso (Alphonso DeNoble) as the fat perverted landlord.
The subject matter is disturbing both the murder of a small child and that it’s potentially by her own sister.

Turdige: Although the acting is good the screaming seems fake especially the mother it gets on your tits but this is a staple of 70s films they all seem like this.
Some people would say it has ripped chunks out of the superior Don't Look Now (1973) mainly the iconic, creepy rain coated small people (Its yellow completely different) but don’t let it put you off.

If a fuckin dog can win BGT so can I
I watched this film when I was very young (probably a bit too young) and the stairwell scene scared the shit out of me I had nightmares of a knife through the foot for years (I still look around now when I walk down one).  Later I actually forgot about this movie and thought it was a scene from Don't Look now, so when I watched that again I thought I had dreamt it.
It was only when I had no internet and blockbuster had gone bust I was going through my sisters DVD collection.  I by by-passed the even more terrifying Mamma Mia & found this played it and I wasn’t mad after all, Now that shit anecdote is out of the way.......

Overall:   A little known Horror masterpiece. suspense and atmosphere to spare.  Don’t miss out watch it.

Director: Alfred Sole Cast: Linda Miller, Mildred Clinton, Paula E. Sheppard, Niles McMaster , Jane Lowry, Brooke Shields
